> In study 2, the researchers piled on enough boosts on the human side and handicaps on the AI side until elite human debaters matched the AIs’ performances.

Related: a debater who participated in the study says humans had extra undisclosed constraints (no copy-pasting, no typing until a reply arrived): https://substack.com/profile/441274590-honestreaction/note/c-308739284

My hunch is that the boost "unconstrained" AI has is:

- Appearing as AI, which implies neutrality/unbiasedness/etc. Participants weren't told, but 300-word replies appearing in <1s is kinda telling (also, constrained AI was rated more human-like).

- Brute-forcing persuasion via proof-by-intellectual-intimidation-style info dumping.

I (naively?) think the gap could disappear if the humans had time to prepare during persuasion itself. Maybe someone should re-run this but make the reply delay a few hours?
